‘Kinetic Typography’ is the all-pervasive art of animating type, most commonly seen in film titling… the first example being Saul Bass’ opening title sequence for Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘North by Northwest’ in 1959. These days we almost take it for granted it has become so ubiquitous.
However, due to the advent of the web and more importantly motion graphics software such as Adobe’s ‘After Effects’, a new take on the art of ‘Kinetic Typography’ abounds. The current form (excluding film titling) is more about the synchronisation of type and graphics with a spoken word piece or more commonly, the lyrics of a song. For many motion designers it has become a rite of passage. There is a dedicated channel on Vimeo with many examples and even tutorials on how to get started making your own.
Here I present, what I’d consider some of the more original examples of what you can do with the technique. Enjoy…
A collection of moments captured in ‘Cinemagraphs’
by NYC photographer Jamie Beck and Graphic Artist Kevin Burg.
’3D Projection Mapping’ is fast gaining in popularity. I recently attended the annual Vivid Festival in Sydney. This year French outfit ‘Superbien’ were invited to light the sails of the famous Opera House. Using the latest in Projection Technology from Australian company ‘The Electric Canvas’, Superbien certainly left their imprint on festival goers.
After such an impressive show, I left the event inspired to research the art form further.
Below, are works I consider to be at the cutting edge of ’3D Projection Mapping’.
In order of appearance: Superbien, Urbanscreen, NuFormer, Seeper and Eness.
Copying is not theft, which is defined as “dishonestly appropriating property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.”
